Gary Kennett

Gary Kennett

Gary is a long time member of the music scene, starting with an interest in percussion at the age of eleven, playing a snare drum in the Holy Cross Elementary Drum and Bugle Corps. From that interest he got his first drum kit and played for several years with garage bands and occasional public performances. At sixteen he was a member of the local band Colour, playing conga drums and singing backup.

In his senior year of college he joined Rudy Fenwick’s band and toured Nova Scotia and other Canadian cities on congas. After graduating from Delaware State University he started a career with Kodak that kept him out of any musical involvement until 2001. Living in Atlanta, he decided it was time to get back into playing music and spent several years playing the open mics, becoming the conga player for the house band at a local jazz supper club called Shadows.

Playing in Atlanta gave him the experience of sharing a stage with Sonny Emory, a drummer with Earth, Wind & Fire; Jeff Bradshaw, a trombonist in the Jill Scott band; and Fred Vigdor, saxophonist with the Average White Band.

In 2006 Gary moved back to Delaware and has been part of the local music scene, playing with a number of local groups as a fill-in on congas. He later joined Tad Jones as drummer in the Harbor Town Band. In 2020 an opportunity arrived to join Reunion Band with previous Colour bandmate Matt Spong. He also plays in the duo Gregaryus as conga player, with lead vocalist and acoustic guitar player Greg Ellingsworth.
